Poetry Therapy Basics
The poet's capacity to distill the macrocosm of human experience into the microcosm of crafted words and images is the essence of interactive poetry therapy. In this introductory workshop, participants learn the core theoretical principles of poetry therapy. Through reading and responding to classic and contemporary poems, participants learn how to assess therapeutic usefulness for particular client populations. The opportunity to write and share original poems is also part of the workshop experience. Participants leave with a collection of poems appropriate for therapeutic purposes, with guidance on how to use them in group or individual therapy. No prior experience with poetry is assumed or needed! This workshop can be customized to meet the needs of contracting organizations.
