Kathleen Adams LPC, RPT-M/S, Instructor

This pass/fail class is designed to offer exposure to, not mastery of, the basic theories and concepts of abnormal psychology for CPT trainees who need to clear the prerequisite requirement, or who want a solid review of material they may have studied decades ago. This class is also popular with those who are interested in mental health and personal growth. The purpose of the class is to orient students to the most common psychological difficulties that they may encounter in people in their poetry/journal therapy groups, and to offer insight and awareness about the types of poems and journal processes that might be especially helpful for the populations under discussion. Each week participants will complete a short response paper which will demonstrate essential understanding. We will set up an email list for students to interact with each other with questions, discussion and resource sharing. I will participate in this list.

The structure of the class will be as follows:

1) Weekly assignments will include referrals to websites that contain excellent, clear, comprehensible information about the week's topic. Students are expected to spend 3 hours/week browsing through the websites, educating themselves on the weekly topic, including exploring links from the various sites. A time log (honor system) will be submitted.

2) Each week, CPT students will find and submit one poem that speaks to the topic and complete a facilitation plan using a form provided.

3) A 2-3 page response paper will be written at the end of the class, synthesizing learning.

4) Annotation of the optional text, "The Abnormal Personality Through Literature," (Stone & Stone, eds.) will be required for additional didactic credit (CPT students only). (This book is out of print but almost always available on the web at half.com or amazon.com used books.)

5) Cost is $200 payable by check or MasterCard/Visa.

6) Assignments will be distributed each Monday morning and each week's homework is due by email submission by the following Sunday evening.

7) Final paper/evaluation is due two weeks after the last class.

8) A certificate of completion will be mailed to each participant with a copy to the Certification Chair.
